This weekend I had a chance to try Empire Pizza's gluten free pizza.

Empire Pizzeria can be found in Glendalough and Como, Western Australia.

I don't know what their procedures are to prevent contamination, and I'm not sure about their toppings either - whether they're aware of the gluten content potential in them, but Rob didn't have a reaction. We'll try to find out more, they do say to let them know of any allergens, and Rob did, so perhaps it is that they know what they're doing.

These pizzas are expensive, compared to Domino's, but they are very, very good. It's also refreshing to hear that the gluten free pizzas ONLY come in Large. How often is it the other way around? Also, I think, from the taste and texture, they might be making the bases themselves. Or someone is.

Any rate, I had the Empire Fire, and it was excellent. Rob had the Sizzling Satay Pizza. Highly recommended for flavour, if not for price, but I reckon it was worth it. I'd be interested to know of their anti-contamination procedures, and which of their toppings are GF, or whether they leave off toppings if they know it's on a GF base.

The other thing we finally had a chance to try on the weekend was the Simply Wize GF Gnocchi.  It cooks really quickly and easily, and it's really light, delicate and fluffy, excellent mouth feel - it doesn't have the glugginess or rubberyness of some Gnocchi I've had before. And it tastes good. It was excellent with bolognese and Romano cheese, accompanied by some nice Greek salad. We found it at Herdsman Fresh Markets where they were mistakenly keeping it in the fridge, so if you can't find it on the shelf there, check the fridge. I did point it out to them.

It's made in Italy - a pity, it would be nice to have it made in Australia, but heh, it's the only GF Gnocchi I can lay my hands on. I'm informed that you should be able to find it on the shelf in IGA, Coles and Woolworths.

Now, a month or two ago, Rob found a recipe for Brazilian Cheese Bread, which is made with tapioca flour, and is easy to make and extremely delicious, and we've cooked them several times in the past month or two. They're very nice.

We were quite startled, walking through Farmer Jacks, to see someone handing out samples that looked oddly familiar. "Here, this is a traditional Brazilian recipe and it's gluten free!" said the lady. We laughed and said "Wow! We just cooked these last week!" Turns out that there's a local bunch turning them out as a convenience food. They sell them in packets in the freezer, you just bake however many you need - and they take about half an hour. They are a very worthy item for the freezer, we had some accompanying a bean stew I'd made, and they're lovely. They form into little balls with a crusty, cheese exterior and a chewy centre. They're very nice all around, and worthwhile eating even if you're not a celiac. They're calling them Cheesebuddy.

So look out for them, because they're very good. If, however, you don't have the fortune to live in Western Australia there's the recipe above to console yourself with.

So there's my gluten news and cooking adventures for the last little while.
